Forby: Handgun registration would take away basic rights

"I don't see how requiring a hunter in Southern Illinois to pay $65 to register his gun is going to stop crimes in Chicago. I'm sick of Chicago politicians pushing their anti-gun laws on the whole state."-State Senator Gary Forby

Springfield, IL - State Senator Gary Forby (D-Benton) was furious to learn that the mayor of Chicago has launched another campaign to take away the gun rights of law-abiding citizens. Mayor Rahm Emmanuel proposed forcing gun owners everywhere in the state of Illinois to pay a

$65 registration fee to own a handgun.

"The right to bear arms is guaranteed in the United States Constitution," Forby said. "Illinois already makes it harder for law-abiding citizens to own guns than almost any other state. I think we should be passing conceal carry, not making legitimate gun owners pay even more money to exercise a constitutional right."

Mayor Emmanuel claims that requiring statewide gun registration will help deter crime in Chicago.

"This is crazy. I don't see how requiring a hunter in Southern Illinois to pay $65 to register his gun is going to stop crimes in Chicago,"

Forby said. "That just doesn't make any sense. I'm sick of Chicago politicians pushing their anti-gun laws on the whole state."

Senator Forby is a staunch supporter of 2nd Amendment rights. He is the chief sponsor of legislation that would allow Illinois citizens to carry concealed weapons-a right held by citizens of every other state in this country. He is also sponsoring legislation to allow all legal adults to obtain FOID (Firearms Owner's Identification) cards without their parents' consent and to create uniform, statewide rules for transporting ammunition. Under current Illinois law, a person must be at least 21 to get a FOID card without parental permission, and ammunition transportation can be regulated by individual cities.
